In a significant policy move, the Meghalaya government has announced its decision to revisit and strengthen the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA), 2016, following the shocking murder of a tourist in Sohra (Cherrapunjee), a major tourist destination in the state.
The incident, which involved the killing of a businessman from Indore during his honeymoon trip, has sent shockwaves across the state and the tourism sector. The government has faced increasing pressure to enhance safety protocols in tourist zones.
What the Chief Minister Said:
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, addressing the media on June 13, stated:
“The Cabinet today decided to revisit the MRSSA in light of the recent unfortunate incident in Sohra. The aim is to further strengthen the Act to better prevent criminal activities carried out under the guise of tourism.”
He further emphasized: “This decision reflects our commitment to ensuring the safety and security of residents while continuing to welcome genuine tourists to our state.”
About the MRSSA:
The Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act, 2016, was originally introduced to monitor the inflow of visitors and outsiders into the state and to ensure safety through mandatory registration at entry points and local accommodations. However, its implementation faced delays and legal concerns.
What Prompted This Action?
• The Indore businessman was reportedly murdered by an unidentified local guide or acquaintance during a private tour in Sohra.
• The case is being investigated by state police, and several arrests are said to be underway.
• Locals and tourism stakeholders have expressed concerns over the lack of verification systems for unregistered guides and informal homestays.
Tourism at a Crossroads:
While Meghalaya continues to be a major travel hub—especially in summer and monsoon seasons—this tragic event has raised serious questions about tourist security in the region’s remote destinations.
Officials now plan to introduce stricter verification mechanisms at all tourism zones, including:
• Mandatory ID checks for tour operators
• Police-verified accommodation databases
• Digital visitor tracking at key attractions.
Travel Tip for Tourists:
Visitors are encouraged to:
• Book only verified guides and accommodations
• Register stays with local police stations where applicable
• Use official tourism helplines for assistance in the Northeast.
