June 15, 2025 | GK News India | Gangtok Desk

After a 5-year pause, the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is set to resume on June 20, 2025, through the Nathu La route in Sikkim. The first batch of 35 pilgrims, accompanied by government officials, arrived in Gangtok today, marking the much-anticipated revival of one of the most sacred spiritual journeys in Asia.

The Sikkim government has made extensive arrangements to ensure a safe and smooth experience. C.S. Rao, Additional Chief Secretary of the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department, informed Akashvani Newsthat the yatris will undergo four days of acclimatization at 15th Mile and Sherathang, where senior defence and government officials will brief them on the journey ahead.

The yatra will be officially flagged off on June 20 by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang at Nathu La, the Indo-China border pass at an altitude of 14,140 ft.

About Kailash Mansarovar

Located in the remote western part of the Tibet Autonomous RegionMount Kailash is believed to be the spiritual center of the universe. Nearby lies Lake Mansarovar, a crystal-clear freshwater lake situated at 15,060 ft. The lake is revered in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Bon traditions, believed to cleanse the soul and fulfill spiritual desires.

Pilgrims often perform a parikrama (circumambulation) around Mount Kailash and take a ritual bath in Lake Mansarovar.

Two Official Yatra Routes:

1. Lipulekh Pass Route (Uttarakhand)

Managed by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA)

Involves a strenuous 3-week trek through high Himalayan terrain

Popular among experienced trekkers

2. Nathu La Pass Route (Sikkim)

Introduced in 2015 as a safer, shorter, and vehicle-accessible alternative

Ideal for elderly pilgrims and those unable to trek long distances

Pilgrims travel by road up to the Tibet border and then continue to Mansarovar via Chinese transportation

“All necessary medical and logistical support has been arranged to ensure the safety of pilgrims,” said Mr. Rao.

With full support from both the Indian and Chinese authorities, and an atmosphere of spiritual unity, the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2025 promises to be a landmark return to one of the world’s most significant pilgrimages.
